Enhancing the Qualitative-Research Culture in Family Studies
Matthews, Sarah H.
Journal of Marriage and Family, v74 n4 p666-670 Aug 2012
Ralph LaRossa (2012) did a fine job of identifying three issues that authors of qualitative submissions to the "Journal of Marriage and Family" ("JMF") should take into account because reviewers are likely to attend to them. His intention was to assist communication between authors and reviewers in order to "increase the representation of qualitative articles in 'JMF' and the visibility of qualitative family research in general." Prospective authors will find the advice useful when deciding whether to submit to "JMF" and when honing their papers. Reviewers will be assisted by considering three additional dimensions on which to evaluate qualitative submissions. In her response to LaRossa's article, the author begins by examining qualitative articles that have been published in "JMF" in the past 4 years (2008-2011) to see whether they conform to the "qualitative-research culture" LaRossa identified. She then raises additional issues that, in her opinion, contribute to the poor representation of qualitative research articles in "JMF" and makes suggestions for ways to overcome them.
