Rapid Prototyping in Instructional Design: Creating Competencies
Fulton, Carolyn D.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Instructional designers working in rapid prototyping environments currently do not have a list of competencies that help to identify the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) required in these workplaces. This qualitative case study used multiple cases in an attempt to identify rapid prototyping competencies required in a rapid prototyping environment. The goal of this study was to identify the KSAs that instructional designers need in a workplace that uses the components of rapid prototyping. Participants in this study included 28 instructional designers who are currently working in rapid prototyping environments. Five project leads that use rapid prototyping also participated in the study. Qualitative data were collected using an online questionnaire. The questionnaire asked each participant questions to gain information about his or her educational background, work experience, and the competencies required in a rapid prototyping environment. The project leads were asked to identify tasks that instructional designers in a rapid prototyping environment complete in the workplace. Five instructional designers participated in one-on-one, individual interviews. The interviews and discussions with the project leads were used to validate the questionnaire findings. The KSAs for instructional designers working in a rapid prototyping environment were identified. With the input of the project leads, the final identification of the competencies was completed.
