Rendezvous with the World: Missouri Southern State University's Themed Semesters
Stebbins, Chad
New Directions for Higher Education, n153 p13-20 Spr 2011
Although most universities emphasize study abroad as the primary vehicle to internationalize the campus, in reality only a small percentage of students actually participate in this endeavor. The internationally themed semesters at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) reach virtually every student, and provide a global perspective and cultural enrichment for the university's external communities. The unique concept of focusing a semester on an international theme was devised as a way to bring the world to every student at the university. Each fall, a country or area of the world becomes the focal point for special courses and activities throughout the semester. Since 1997, MSSU has organized themed semesters focusing on China, Africa, Latin America, America, Japan, India, Cuba, Russia, Mexico, France, Germany, Canada, and Brazil. The semesters have expanded from around a dozen scheduled events to more than 65 on occasion. This innovative approach introduces students to at least four different cultures during a typical undergraduate education. Faculty with expertise in the highlighted country work to develop special course offerings for the semester. The most significant outcome of the themed semester approach to global education at MSSU has been the widespread participation of the entire university.
