The Values and Attitudes of Russia's Young People
Zorkaia, Nataliia; Diuk, Nadia M.
Russian Education and Society, v47 n6 p6-32 Jun 2005
Numerous surveys by the Russian Center for Public-Opinion Research [VTsIOM] have shown that young people, in contrast to members of the middle and, especially, the older generations, typically have a high degree of satisfaction with their lives: more than three-fifths of young people (66 percent) are satisfied, just over one-quarter (27 percent) are more or less unhappy, and only 5 percent are completely unhappy. The level of satisfaction is even higher in the case of the very youngest segment, teenagers, and those who have achieved relatively high social status, such as young entrepreneurs, managers, specialists, and young people who give a high rating to their consumer status. The predominance of these feelings stems from a greater sense of confidence in their own powers, a pronounced orientation toward the realization of personal interests and goals (including educational and career goals), and an orientation toward accomplishment and success that is more powerful and significant than found in older generations. The parents of a substantial portion of the young people surveyed have already gone through the "critical" phase of adaptation to the changed social, economic, and political conditions. Most of the respondents today say that "life is not easy, but one can handle it." Indicators of the population?s level of adaptation to the changes has shown a positive dynamic since the start of the Putin era. This is even more typical of young people.
