Personalized Thematic Kits
Bontrager, Sharon
Learning Languages, v16 n1 p18-20 Fall 2010
Teaching Spanish at the K-5 level is a passion of mine, and the author would like to share some of the practical applications that she finds most rewarding and effective. She has found enthusiastic response to the creation of detailed language learning kits that are rooted in storytelling, but expanded to include home-made board games, contextualized mini-stories and music! In her experience, the best-intentioned workbooks and curriculum packages just do not meet the personalized needs of an individual classroom. She understands that there are many restrictions on curriculum and teachers are often told to "teach to the test" and to use scripted lesson plans. Instead of feeling squeezed by the standards, the author chooses to ignite the students' imagination through play and real-life scenarios. The author shares the home-made language learning kits she chose. The kit items combine materials from primary classrooms (K-2).
