This book examines various aspects of parenting and influences on parents, including such key contexts affecting child development as school, neighborhood, and culture. After a forward by Urie Bronfenbrenner and a preface by Tom Luster and Lynn Okagaki, which together help to introduce the topics to be discussed, the book is divided into nine chapters: (1) "Developmental Origins of Parenting: Personality and Relationship Factors" (Joan Vondra and Jay Belsky); (2) "Development of Parental Beliefs" (Lynn Okagaki and Diana Johnson Divecha); (3) "Adolescent Mothers" (Tom Luster and Mary Mittelstaedt); (4) "The Influence of Child Temperamental Characteristics on Parent Behaviors" (Jacqueline V. Lerner); (5) "Parenting and the Marital Relationship" (Robert E. Emery and Michele Tuer); (6) "Parenting and Personal Social Networks" (Moncrieff Cochran); (7) "The Long Arm of the Job: Influences of Parental Work on Childrearing" (Ann C. Crouter and Susan M. McHale); (8) Neighborhood and Community Influences on Parenting" (James Garbarino and Kathleen Kostelny); and (9) "Multiple Influences on Parenting: Ecological and Life-Course Perspectives" (Tom Luster and Lynn Okagaki).
