Planning and prevention is the best defense against fires in school. This is particularly true in the science laboratory due to the presence of flammable gases, liquids, combustibles, and other potential sources of fire. Teachers can prevent fires from starting by maintaining prudent lab practices when dealing with combustible and flammable materials. It is also important for them to know how to handle fires when they do start. This article provides a review for teachers and covers, usage of fire extinguishers, house keeping safety tips for clutter free, and safer laboratory spaces in schools, evacuation of classrooms in the event of fire, and procedures to follow if a student's clothing should catch on fire.
