Raising the Institutional Research Profile: Assessing the Context and Expanding the Use of Organizational Frames

Institutional researchers can extend their dexterity in assessing the decision-making process at a university by developing a more robust array of organizational frames. The application of four organizational frames (structural frame, human resource frame, political frame, and symbolic frame) "deepens one's appreciation and understanding of organizations" (Bolman and Deal, 2008, p. 18). By using this approach, institutional researchers may increase the consistency of being at the table by adding depth and breadth to their view of the college or university decision making. Expanding their frames may identify previously missed opportunities or highlight alternative ways of being effective once at the table. This chapter describes three aspects of the higher education context that complicate the task of finding the table, examines the contrasting features of four organizational frames, and suggests practical strategies for raising the institutional research profile and securing a consistent seat at the table.
