LibTech Highlights from ALA Midwinter
Hane, Paula J.
Computers in Libraries, v29 n4 p42-45 Apr 2009
Despite lower attendance than in the past and blustery, cold weather, the American Library Association's Midwinter Meeting in Denver in January offered lots of news from industry vendors and lots of opportunities to discuss important issues and trends. In this report, the author highlights some of the most important product announcements with a focus on library technology developments. At the conference, LibLime, an upstart company that has provided open source software solutions for libraries for several years, launched biblios.net, a free, browser-based cataloging service with a data archive containing more than 30 million bibliographic and authority records. Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) also announced a partnership that will ultimately transfer an open access icon, the University of Michigan Library's OAIster service, to OCLC. Serials Solutions, a ProQuest subsidiary, showed its new "unified discovery service," which sports a simple search box that lets users search across all the library's collections, including licensed content and the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)--both digital and physical content.
