Working Adults in Accelerated Cohorts: More than a Learning Community

There are 54 million working adults in the United States without bachelor's degrees (Pusser et al., 2007). Many would like to obtain a college degree but need an educational program that fits their needs. A viable alternative to a traditional college program is an accelerated program in a cohort format. This article highlights best practices for developing and administering accelerated cohorts for working adults. Specific information is provided about accelerated cohort programs at Mount Olive College in North Carolina, a small, private, not-for-profit institution. Over the last four years, Mount Olive College has increased enrollment an average of 12% each year. Eighty percent of the students enrolled are working adults pursuing a degree through an accelerated cohort program. (Contains 2 footnotes.)
