Sometimes students don't think they're musical, and even if they do, they may still question how taking a music class now might help them in the future. Interdisciplinary teaching--an educational style that takes in elements of more than one subject at a time--can be a major help in such cases. In the words of Elizabeth Ann McAnally, general music teacher at the Wilson Middle School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, interdisciplinary teaching "connects what I am trying to help the kids understand in music class with what they are learning in other areas of their life." McAnally is a proponent of interdisciplinary teaching, but she admits that there are some boundaries she won't cross. If it doesn't clearly enhance music learning she won't include it in her curriculum. So if interdisciplinary teaching is such a good thing, why don't more teachers do it? It all comes down to time, McAnally says. "I think classroom teachers are receptive to these ideas, but they're under pressure."
