Transfer Students in Higher Education: Building Foundations for Policies, Programs, and Services that Foster Student Success. The First-Year Experience Monograph Series No. 54
Poisel, Mark Allen, Ed.; Joseph, Sonya, Ed.
National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition
"Transfer Students in Higher Education" presents what individuals know about transfer students, addresses assumptions and myths about the transfer experience, and explores the changing demographics of this student group. Adopting a student-centered approach, the monograph offers strategies to begin (and continue) the work of serving students and creating transfer-friendly campus environments. Chapter authors explore the issue from the perspective of both sending and receiving institutions and provide research, case studies, and best practices to help institutions meet the challenges of enrollment, orientation, advisement, retention, and graduation of transfer students. This monograph contains the following chapters: (1) The Changing Nature of Today's Transfer Students (Marc Cutright); (2) Enrollment Management of Transfer Students (Lee F. Furbeck); (3) The Role of Feeder Community Colleges (Trudy Bers and Donna Younger); (4) Partnerships and Student Pathways (Sanford C. Shugart and David T. Harrison); (5) Transfer Student Centers (Jerry Collins, Catharine Penfold Navarro, and Charlene Stinard); (6) Establishing Pathways for Transfer Student Success Through Orientation (Janet L. Marling and Bonita C. Jacobs); (7) Academic Advising and Career Development for Undecided Transfer Students (Kimberly O. Van Wie); (8) Transfer Success and Accountability: A Texas Perspective (Janet Beinke, Doug Bond, Gabriela Borcoman, Julie Eklund, James Goeman, and Kevin Lemoine); (9) Recommendations for Ensuring Transfer Student Success (Mark Allen Poisel and Sonya Joseph). A foreword by Jennifer R. Keup and an introduction by Mark Allen Poisel and Sonya Joseph are included.
