10 Minutes of Bliss
Smith, Olynda
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v26 n1 p48-50 Spr 2014
For many of us, it is challenging to find the time to sleep enough each night or to sit down for a meal. So how can this author convince you that taking 10 minutes to do anything every day is actually worth it? The benefits of meditation--increased calm, clarity, compassion, and empathy, to name a few--have been known for centuries. Recently, scientists have discovered that significant changes take place in our brain chemistry when we meditate (Davidson & Lutz, 2008). Meditation also fortifies and changes connections between other parts of the brain. For example, the link between the medial prefrontal cortex and the insula grows stronger through meditation, which "enhances your capacity to understand where another person is coming from, especially those who you cannot intuitively understand because you think or perceive things differently" (Gladding, 2013). This article presents a few meditations designed to cultivate concentration. The author suggests that, after practicing meditation on your own, try integrating into classroom work.
