Building an Expanded Learning Time and Opportunities School: Principals' Perspectives

Expanded learning time and opportunities (ELTO) requires a committed school leader who is willing to partner with community-based organizations in order to provide strong academic and enrichment daily experiences for his or her students. This article examines four such leaders and the diverse approaches they took to implement ELTO in their schools. Leo Politi Elementary School (Los Angeles), Jane Long Middle School (Houston), The Bronx School of Science Inquiry and Investigation (Bronx, New York), and Edward Bleeker Junior High School (Queens, New York) are among a growing number of public schools that are expanding their school hours and learning opportunities to serve their students better. Located in resource-poor communities serving primarily low-income and minority children, the principals of these four schools transformed their buildings into full-day facilities that offer rigorous academic, enrichment, and developmental experiences in order to help their students overcome adversity and get ready for the next transition in their lives.
