Tracking the Progress of English Language Learners
Murphy, Audrey F.
Phi Delta Kappan, v91 n3 p25-31 Nov 2009
Educators need to document progress for English language learners, and the best structures to put into place in order to record their growth. Beginning with the stages of language proficiency, student progress can be tracked through the use of a baseline in all four language strands and the creation of rubrics to monitor performance. Language objectives should be used to inform the stages of language proficiency, and can be embedded within instruction in the mini lesson, guided grouping and conferencing. The incorporation of schoolwide language goals into lesson plans for both classroom teachers and content specialists are then explored to ensure that instruction for ELLs is driven by language development as well as subject area content.
