Five Steps to Help You Determine if You Need the New "It" Technology
Kozikowski, Chester, III
Computers in Libraries, v30 n6 p6-8 Jul-Aug 2010
Technologists may find themselves alone on the bleachers trying to find supporters for the next "it" technology. Despite their enthusiasm, many times "it" ends up unused because a thorough evaluation was not performed prior to purchase. Before technologists lobby for approval or support of a new project, the author presents five questions for them to answer in order to help them to critically consider the effect the new technology will have on their department and prepare them to answer the inevitable questions from those in control of the budget. Being organized, planned, and stress-free will allow one to focus on what's important--introducing useful and current technology to the community. The five questions are: (1) What need does "it" fulfill?; (2) Why can't one live without "it"?; (3) Whom can one use as a guinea pig to test "it"?; (4) How will one make sure "it" is used?; and (5) Where does "it" fall into one's future plans? Some steps to implement new technology are included.
