Content of General Education in Relation to Occupational Training. Country Experiences.
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Bangkok (Thailand). Principal Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.
Studies were conducted in 10 countries of Asia and the Pacific (Australia, China, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Republic of Korea, Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Thailand, and Turkey) to determine whether general education school leavers are able to meet the requirements of various occupational training programs. Each country reviewed its own policies and objectives of education, particularly the general education system as it relates to the preparation of skilled workers for various occupations. This involved examining the different training and retraining programs along with the content of general education and the matching of admission requirements in the first with competencies acquired in the second. Congruence between the two components is believed to improve the job prospects of graduates, because they could be easily trained for various jobs. This issue was raised in the 10 countries, and the transition from education to the world of work was also examined. The studies in the countries show how various efforts toward bridging any gap between general education and vocational training have been made. The first four chapters of this report examine educational policies--objectives, structures, and content, occupational training and retraining, directions and trends in occupational areas, and raising the relevance of training for employment in the 10 countries. The final chapter offers some conclusions and recommendations for the future. (KC)
