A Secondary-Level Curriculum in Industrial Electronics and Robotics. Final Report.
Besancon, Francis E.
A curriculum was developed to provide the electromechanical skills necessary to operate and repair industrial robots to students at the secondary and adult vocational levels. To determine requirements for entry-level positions in the robotics industry, manufacturers and employers of industrial robots were contacted. No particular entry-level skills were expected for jobs involving the operation and routine maintenance of robots. Positions entailing robot repair and troubleshooting generally required the skills of an electronics technician. Following the nine-page final report is the robotics curriculum. Materials are provided for four courses: electronics I (AC and DC fundamentals), electronics II (control devices and circuit theory), digital electronics, and robotics. Components presented for each course include an introduction, course objectives, and an outline of course content (objectives, content, laboratory experiments and demonstrations) for each of the 7 to 18 units within the course. Some recommendations for student evaluation are made. Appendixes include results of a survey of employment practices in the robotics industry, sample job descriptions and requirements for employment in the robotics industry, and listings of manufacturers of industrial robots, recommended equipment, and textbooks and reference materials.
