NCLEX-RN Examination Performance by BSN Graduates of Four Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Chesney, Anita M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trevecca Nazarene College
This qualitative multiple-case study research explored and described differences as well as NCLEX-RN preparation strategies used by Historically Black College and University (HBCU) baccalaureate nursing programs with consistent NCLEX pass rates versus those with inconsistent pass rates. Two of the four selected programs had a history of consistent first-time pass rates (above the national average) between 2002 and 2007. The study included site visits, 14 informant interviews, and document analysis. Case descriptions were organized using Bolman and Deal's (2008) organizational model. Findings indicated that the programs with consistent NCLEX-RN pass rates maintained more comprehensive policies, collaborative and supportive institutional relationships, placed more focus on test-taking skills, and obtained external funding at higher levels than inconsistent programs.
