Tucking the Pigeons up Your Sleeve: Ten Personae Teach One Nonfiction Course
Sunstein, Bonnie S.
English Journal, v99 n4 p13-21 Mar 2010
Nonfiction writing, as defined by the author, is the mix of art, craft, and information, put together by writers who let readers know they are interested in a topic, and who speculate about what that interest or topic might mean. In this article, the author introduces ten imagined colleagues who provide essential support for the teaching of nonfiction writing. They are: (1) The Tradition-Bearer: Anna Analman; (2) The Tradition-Breaker: Buster Complacency; (3) The Writer-as-Reader; the Reader-as-Writer: Janus Influentsia; (4) The Exercise Coach: Lexical Aerobix; (5) The Private Counselor: Seymour Gestalt; (6) The Public Collaborator: Sympatico M. Pathique; (7) Reluctant Grader: Woody Gavel; (8) The Commissioner of the Truth: Polly Veritas; (9) The Travel Agent: Sally Forth; and (10) The Archivist: Stash Quotable. (Contains 2 notes.)
