Using Baseball in Social Studies Instruction: Addressing the Five Fundamental Themes of Geography
Edgington, William D.; Hyman, William
Social Studies, v96 n3 p113 May 2005
Many children do not enjoy social studies because they see it as having little, if any, relevance to their lives. That response is attributable primarily to two factors: Dry content and even drier instructional strategies. Teachers know that if material presented to children is not meaningful and relevant to their lives, real learning does not occur. The challenge for teachers is to relate the material in such a way that children can make real and practical applications. Usually, tying the material into the children's interests accomplishes that; and one continuing interest that has appealed to children for many years is baseball. With this article, the authors present an approach for using baseball to catch elementary and middle school students' interest in social studies. Other instructional strategies that uses baseball to help teach geography focus primarily on practicing basic geographic skills or comparing different cultures. This article, on the other hand, focuses on helping children develop research skills and on addressing the five fundamental themes of geography, namely: (1) location; (2) place; (3) human-environmental interaction; (4) movement; and (5) regions.
