Friendship and Thomas More: Using Erasmus's Letter to Ulrich von Hutten as a Tool in Developing a Classroom Management Plan

The development of course management plans and student behavioral guidelines are a necessary component for the foundation of any school or learning community. In this article the authors explore a few of the principal foundations of creating these plans based on the qualities Erasmus described in his great friend Thomas More. Teachers and administrators work together to develop guidelines and policies, based on grade level and community expectations, that address their particular students. However, many of these behavioral objectives have not been thoroughly researched to their foundations. The authors explore how a letter outlining an ideally educated person, Sir Thomas More, can be the foundation for such a plan. The authors begin by describing More, and then discuss a plan for classroom management based on the letter Erasmus wrote to Ulrich von Hutten about More. The particular qualities that Erasmus praised in More are tied to modern schools.
