Establishment of a Business Training Center and Development of Partnerships with Local High Schools and Businesses. Final Report.
Carter, Kathleen G.
In 1989, Salem Community College (SCC) developed a Business Training Center (BTC) to enhance and/or develop significant partnerships with high schools and business and industry. Through the Center, SCC implemented programs of study and shared services and/or externships with the DuPont Company and three local high schools. The partnership with DuPont resulted in a joint secretarial externship program, which combined a year of college study with on-the-job training at the firm. Through SCC's agreements with the high schools, students visit BTC's computer laboratory several times a semester; others attend a BTC summer course in word processing for college-bound students; and high school faculty and BTC staff are working to develop a telecommunications link between the high school and college. During the spring semester, and first and second summer sessions, 134 students and six employer groups were served in some way by the BTC, and 85% of the enrolled students satisfactorily completed all course objectives. Further evidence of the success of the project will be gathered through student and employer surveys. The bulk of the document consists of appendixes providing additional detail; they include a module use evaluation, publicity materials, a participant survey analysis, a course outline, and a list of BTC resources.
