Morton, Marlys; Schwer, R. Keith; Daneshvary, Rennae; Potts, Robert; Klein, Freda
This KIDS COUNT data book details statewide trends in the well-being of Nevada's children. The statistical portrait is based on indicators of children's well-being in five areas: (1) health conditions and health care; (2) economic well-being; (3) education and achievement; (4) child and youth safety and welfare; and (5) juvenile justice. The data book begins with an overview and profile of the state demographics, including data on minority populations. The remainder of the report provides specific information on the primary indicators, organized as follows: (1) definition of the indicator and what it measures; (2) research highlights summarizing current research from academic, foundation, and public materials; and (3) related tables and figures listing most recent available data for each indicator, including data for the county and state. Specific indicators examined are: (1) low birth weight babies; (2) infant mortality; (3) teen births; (4) births to women lacking prenatal care; (5) WIC program participation; (6) health care for children and youth; (7) children in poverty; (8) federal program participation; (9) child care; (10) child support; (11) characteristics of formal education; (12) testing, proficiency and college-entrance efforts; (13) high school dropout and graduation rates; (14) special education enrollees; (15) Head Start participation; (16) child deaths; (17) teen violent deaths; (18) child abuse and neglect; (19) children and domestic violence; (20) children in substitute care; and (21) juvenile violent crime. The report concludes with a listing of developmental assets of youth, and references and resources. (Contains seven pages of references.) (SD)
