On the Art Career Track: Behold... the Cow as Art
Osterer, Irv
Arts & Activities, v149 n2 p32-33 Mar 2011
Cows have been a favorite subject for many artists, including Canadian artist Joe Fafard. In this article, grade 11 graphic-design students do a series of exercises in their sketchbooks using the cow motif. Each exercise was designed to have students move from traditional pictures of the dairy cow to more eclectic visual solutions. Eight preliminary drawings were done in student sketchbooks. From these, they chose their favorite images and incorporated at least four into a pleasing cow landscape. Next, students chose what they considered the best cow rendering in their sketchbooks. This time, rather than focus on the abstract, they were to think of their cow image as the focus of a design used for a one-liter milk carton. Students finished their cow design exploration by again choosing one of their images and rendering it as a front panel for the Cow Brand baking-soda company.
