In this article, the authors state that one of the major challenges facing the human race is charting a course for the future that allows economic growth while protecting the fragile planet. The authors discuss the role that higher education must play to help create a vibrant economy and high quality of life, while sustaining natural resources. Furthermore, Mary Spangler, chancellor of Oakland Community College; David Shi, president of Furman University; Juan Olivarez, president of Grand Rapids Community College; and Daniel Fogel, president of the University of Vermont, add their views on sustainability.
