The project would create hundreds of jobs during the construction phase and dozens of long-term jobs. The plant, which would be located near the university's engineering school, would also provide a hands-on laboratory for students to study energy efficiency. But opponents, including a half-dozen Florida State scientists, the NAACP, and some local residents, argue that the plant could endanger the health of people living in the predominantly minority neighborhood where the property is located.
