Commentary on "Education, Employment and Human Development: Illustrations from Mexico"
Strathdee, Rob
Journal of Education and Work, v20 n1 p71-73 Feb 2007
Flores-Crespo has written a timely paper, "Education, employment and human development: illustrations from Mexico". Flores-Crespo uses Amartya Sen's ideas to bring a fresh perspective to bear on the relationship between higher education and human development. Although there is growing interest in applying Sen's ideas in a range of disciplines, to date these have not been used as fruitfully as they might in research into higher education. For this reason, Flores-Crespo's contribution to the debate is welcome. To advance Sen's arguments however, further debate and development is required. This brief commentary aims to contribute to this work. The author begins by briefly outlining some features of Sen's work, before offering some comments on the strengths and weaknesses of Flores-Crespo's contribution.
