The Experimental College.
Meiklejohn, Alexander
"The Experimental College" tells the story of a 4-year academic experiment at the University of Wisconsin established by Alexander Meiklejohn. Aimed at finding a method of teaching that would help students develop "intelligence in the conduct of their own lives," the Experimental College discarded major requirements, examinations, lectures, and mandatory attendance. The controversial experiment lasted only a few years. The reasons are discussed in the introduction by Rolanld L. Guyotte. This replica of the original book contains these chapters: (1) "The Aim of the Liberal College"; (2) "The Course of Study"; (3) "The Methods of Teaching"; (4) "The Determining Conditions"; (5) "A Suggestion for the College of Letters and Science"; (6) "Experimenting in a University"; (7)"Conclusions"; (8) "Postscript"; and (9) "Appendices." Appendices include some notes on the beginning of the Experimental College, assignments, and reading lists for students leaving the college. (SLD)
