An interpretive account of the major events in the history of Kansas State University (KSU) is presented in this book. Originally chartered as a land-grant college, the university's original purpose was to provide much-needed agricultural education for the people of Kansas. Its development into a center distinguished for agricultural research is traced from its beginning in 1860 as Bluemont Central College. Much of the history of Kansas State involves the conflict over the "trade school syndrome." Although the original emphasis of the university was agriculture and vocational training, there was also the desire for Kansas State University to be recognized as an important institution offering general, liberal education; this conflict is discussed throughout the book. With the establishment of the School of Arts and Sciences in 1942-43, liberal, or general education, became a central core for the University. The terms and accomplishments of the 10 university presidents are described and particular attention is given to the 25 year tenure of President McCain. Although they were some of the most turbulent years, many of the major accomplishments and changes at KSU are attributed to McCain's leadership from 1950 to 1975. The university regents, presidents, vice presidents, deans and other officers are listed and their dates of service are given. (BH)
