Counseling View of Abortion in Nigeria
Ogwokhademhe, M. C.; Sowho, Paulina O.
Planning and Changing, v46 n3-4 p324-333 2015
Guidance and counseling are twin words that help people adjust to their psychological, emotional, social and psychosocial problems which tend to occur in human life. Abortion, which is a prevalent problem in Nigeria mostly among the teenage girls, has drawn the attentions of the counselors, teachers, guardians, administrators, researchers and the various care giver groups to see how this problem will be curbed. Counselors have viewed this problem as a psychological and emotional problem that called for the assistance of trained counselors to see to its eradication and that is what this article sets out to achieve. The article made use of some counseling strategies in educating and assisting teenage girls to be able to be firm and know and adjust adequately and effectively to the various psychosexual stages at the adolescent period and cope effectively with the various growth spurts exhibited by their body chemistry. The article also teaches the effective use of "assertiveness" and other valuable strategies to be able to say "No" to indecent act without offending parties involved and "Yes" when the need arise. It was recommended that in fulfilling this dream, counselors should employ the joint activities and support of parents, teachers, guardians, administrators, and education stakeholders to see how these young women could be re-directed to the morals of the culture and the society at large to reduce the incidence of infertility and inability to conceive when pregnancy is wanted.
