This volume has been assembled to show what can be learned about learning from large groups of children's responses to well-constructed assessment questions. The wide range of information gathered through the Basic Skills Testing Program (BSTP) has been divided into chapters that focus either on key aspects of mathematics or the major concerns of those teaching mathematics in primary schools. Field experts have contributed their views on what the BSTP results indicate about children's learning and understanding of mathematics with an emphasis on findings that will be of most significance to classroom teachers. Further, in order to provide a classroom-based perspective, practicing teachers were invited to write commentaries on some chapters. Chapters include: (1) "Classroom Views of Language in Mathematics"; (2) "Classroom Views of Gender Differences"; (3) "Classroom Views of Problem Solving in Context"; (4) "Classroom Views of Number"; (5) "Classroom Views of Length, Area, and Volume"; (6) "Classroom Views of Space"; and (7) "A Study of the Use of The BSTP Results."
