Serving as the basis for the first administrative complaint alleging sex discrimination in textbooks to be filed under federal law, the findings presented in this report are based on an analysis, made by parents and citizens in a midwestern city, of 12 texts in the elementary reading program of a major publisher. Generally, the findings are stated in quantitative terms and are grouped under three categories: the assignment of abilities, traits, interests and activities on the basis of sex stereotypes; the lack of recognition of the actions and achievements of women in biography and history, and the male-relatedness of female historical figures; and the lack of respect for women and girls as evidenced by their underrepresentation in the content and illustrations of the books, the demeaning and derogatory content, and the absence of female reference words. The analysis shows that sex discrimination in these textbooks is extensive in all categories.
