Although distributed computing environments constitute the core of the curriculum in today's schools of information studies, this was not the case in the 1980s. This article examines the current roles of traditionally trained librarians, focusing on the University of Michigan Library's Document Center and how document principles for traditional library media apply to Internet materials.
