Helping Students with a Disability Meet the National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes
Smail, Karen M.; MacDonald, Cathy
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v86 n7 p35-39 2015
Every student must be given the opportunity to participate in physical education and develop the skills and knowledge competencies to become skillful movers for a lifetime. Students with disabilities have unique needs that must be addressed in the least restrictive environment. With the adoption of the "National Standards and Grade-level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education" come new challenges for teachers to find ways of adapting activities so that these students can learn and participate. Teachers are often faced with a variety of student needs in a class, and knowing what accommodations best fit each student often overshadows the need to plan daily instruction and assessment that meet standards and outcomes. The purpose of this article is to provide guidelines that teachers can use to create meaningful learning experiences essential to meeting the National Standards and grade-level outcomes for all students.
