Online Programs to Stop Sexual Harassment: Easy to Use but Not Always Enough
June, Audrey Williams
Chronicle of Higher Education, v55 n24 pA10 Feb 2009
A college's first line of defense against employees' making insinuating remarks, unwanted sexual advances, or requests for sexual favors is often about an hour of online sensitivity training. Some people, however, wonder if that line is strong enough. According to a 2006 survey of undergraduate students by the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation, nearly one out of every five students reported that faculty and staff members often or occasionally sexually harass students. The same survey showed an even greater amount of student-on-student harassment. Trainers at colleges that offer face-to-face talks about sexual harassment are able to entertain questions about shades of gray, but the author expresses concern that a growing number of institutions who rely largely on Web-based training programs because they are the simplest and least expensive way to reach the most people do not allow exploration of the nuances of sexual harassment.
