Facts and activities related to weather and meteorology are presented in this unit. Separate sections cover the following topics: (1) the water cycle; (2) clouds; (3) the Beaufort Scale for rating the speed and force of wind; (4) the barometer; (5) weather prediction; (6) fall weather in Iowa (sleet, frost, and fog); (7) winter weather in Iowa (snow, snowflakes, blizzards, and treatment for cold weather exposure); (8) dew, hail, and rain; (9) thunderstorms and lightning; and (10) tornadoes. The types of materials provided in the unit include: pretests-posttests; explanations of weather forecasting, weather reporting, and different types of weather; illustrations; reading comprehension questions; experiments; charts; flannelboard and bulletin board ideas; science activities; art activities; word-find puzzles; supplemental activities; a list of locally available resources; and games.
