Is the Office Hour Obsolete?
Behrens, Susan
Research & Teaching in Developmental Education, v29 n2 p30-37 Spr 2013
A colleague can't make a coffee date at a time the author proposes because it would conflict with his office hour. No student has actually made an appointment with him during the hour, but he is committed to being in his office as promised in case someone drops by. The author's reaction to her colleague's faithfulness to his posted office hour schedule got her thinking about her reaction. What does her assumption say about how she views the concept of the office hour and its role in 21st Century higher education? She decided to take an informal poll of some of her colleagues to explore their view on the office hour and also of some students to get a range of impressions about the usefulness of posted hours. The overall message is that office hour potential goes largely untapped. All this contemplation of the perhaps anachronistic creature known as the office hour leads her to consider some new ways of exploiting its potential so that teachers are most effectively giving time to their students.
