The Assembly on University Goals and Governance. A First Report.
American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Boston, MA.
The Assembly on University Goals and Governance was established by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in September 1969 to explore, develop, and help implement alternative approaches for resolving certain of the issues affecting colleges and universities today. This report presents the 85 theses that were developed by the Assembly. The theses fall under the following general sub-heads: (1) learning as the central mission of colleges and universities; (2) knowledge as a basis for educational reform; (3) extending the choice in terms of admissions and attendance; (4) the need for experimentation and flexibility in undergraduate and graduate education; (5) the desirability of diversification and differentiation; (6) preservation of the private and public systems; (7) enhancing the professoriate; (8) the need for strong but accountable executive authority; and (9) the essence of self help. The second section discusses some of the history of higher education in the U.S. as a perspective for the theses. The Assembly prospectus is included in the appendix. (AF)
