The Diffusion of Home Computers: An Exploratory Study.

This document reports results from an exploratory investigation into the adoption and use of microcomputers in the home, which involved interviews with 77 home computer owners, 19 individuals who were in the process of computer adoption, and a small sample of home computer manufacturers and retailers. The first two chapters provide information on the background of home computers and the methodology used to gather data for this project. The following chapters analyze results with regard to (1) the diffusion of innovation; (2) the innovation-decision process in home computer adoption; (3) attributes of home computers and their diffusion, including five attributes of innovations: relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, observability, and triability; (4) social networks and the pattern of home computer diffusion; (5) consequences of home computer adoption; and (6) directions for future research. Twenty-four references are cited. Appendices include a list of students involved in the research, abstracts of award-winning student papers on home computer diffusion, the adopter and non-adopter questionnaires, and response frequency information for the adopter questionnaire.
