Millikan's Oil-Drop Experiment as a Remotely Controlled Laboratory
Eckert, Bodo; Grober, Sebastian; Vetter, Martin; Jodl, Hans-Jorg
European Journal of Physics, v33 n5 p1227-1233 Sep 2012
The Millikan oil-drop experiment, to determine the elementary electrical charge e and the quantization of charge Q = n [middle dot] e, is an essential experiment in physics teaching but it is hardly performed in class for several reasons. Therefore, we offer this experiment as a remotely controlled laboratory (RCL). We describe the interactivity of the experiment and the quality of measurements. The added value to offer the Millikan experiment as an RCL is pointed out. (Contains 4 figures and 1 footnote.)
