No Child Left Behind: Implications for College Student Learning
Trolian, Teniell L.; Fouts, Kristin S.
About Campus, v16 n3 p2-7 Jul-Aug 2011
In 2002, former US President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) into law, leading to a significant change in the way elementary and secondary teachers design curricula and instruct their students, as well as the ways in which students learn and view learning in and outside of the classroom. Most domestic students entering college now have been exposed to standardized tests and other by-products of NCLB since the fifth grade. Over the course of eight years of tightly choreographed and measured learning, many students have developed certain learning and social behaviors that could pose unique challenges in a college or university learning environment. Higher education professionals who work closely with students to ensure their success and engagement with the institution should be concerned about the influence students' academic histories may have on their overall college experience. In this article, the authors highlight the key components of NCLB, as well as some potential skill, resource, and transitional issues students may encounter as the NCLB "era" continues.
