How Do They Do It? Career Strategies of University Professors Noted for Taking Teaching Seriously
Terosky, Aimee LaPointe
Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, v21 n1 p121-145 2010
This qualitative study examines the career strategies of 17 professors at a major research university who are noted by key colleagues and former students for taking their teaching seriously. The author discusses two career strategies--applying career design principles and acting resourcefully about teaching development--that help these professors, who vary by academic rank and discipline, take their teaching seriously within the current realities of the academic career. She concludes by providing specific examples of participants' practices that may guide other professors as they construct their careers as well as administrators as they support faculty work and development.
