Focusing on Success: Teaching Students with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Grades 1-12
Price, Anne; Crawford, Shawn; Tottle, Johanne; Maunula, Susan
Online Submission
This publication focuses on teaching students with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). The first chapter identifies and explains AD/HD: its causes, characteristics, its diagnosis and assessment process, related conditions, and what it looks in the classroom. The following chapters offer information and sample strategies supporting students with AD/HD. Chapters cover building home-school partnerships, understanding approaches to managing AD/HD, creating supportive classroom environments, choosing instructional strategies, building connections, moving to independence, and keeping informed about AD/HD. The focus is on success for the student. Sample tools and recommended books are listed in the appendices. Among the sample tools are an Individualized Program Plan, a checklist for spotting unproven remedies, a reading strategies survey, and a reviewing tool for the effectiveness of a support strategy. An index is also included. [Contributing writers include: Mara Biasotto; Mary Cole; and Marya Jarvey. This document was published by Alberta Education's Learning and Teaching Resources Branch. The development of this resource was a collaborative project between Calgary Learning Centre and Alberta Education.]
