Reading Comprehension at Four Linguistic Levels.
Pennock, Clifford, Ed.
Focusing on reading comprehension instruction at the word, sentence, paragraph, and larger unit levels, the articles in this volume were drawn from a variety of sources. The three articles in the first section deal with theoretical bases and conceptual concerns. Specific topics covered include the argument for a discourse analysis model, the effect of motivation on attitude and comprehension, and the effects of humorous literary content on immediate and delayed comprehension. The second section includes nine articles that deal with practical suggestions for improving comprehension instruction. The areas covered are word meaning and sentence meaning skills, reciprocal questioning, the effect of advance organizers on main idea comprehension, reciprocal questioning and the directed reading lesson, a comprehension-centered reading program, using content materials for improving comprehension skills, techniques for the improvement of questioning, and "radio" reading.
