This qualitative research study was based on interviews with 17 persons who had traditional-age undergraduate students currently attending college. The purpose was to explore the parents' perception of the parent-student relationship regarding their degree of parental involvement with their college students' experiences and to explore if that involvement is different than that of their own parents' involvement. Results of the interviews indicated that today's parents are more involved in their students' experiences. The essence of parental involvement was described in a variety of ways including college selection, campus contact, and care/guidance. The perception of parental involvement was presented through the four themes: communication, development and adjustment, satisfaction, and influence. Six assumptions are posited from this study: parental involvement at the postsecondary level may be as difficult to operationalize as at the elementary and secondary levels; university student services including college recruitment may contribute to the increase of levels of today's parental involvement; institutions should provide more training on FERPA; parents and college personnel describe students differently with respect to whether students are considered adults or children; parents also have many adjustments when their students attend college; and overall, these parents believed that their levels of parental involvement strengthened their students' problem-solving skills.
