Copyright in the Age of Photocopiers, Word Processors, and the Internet
Shaw, Marjorie Hodges; Shaw, Brian B.
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v35 n6 p20-27 Nov-Dec 2003
Widespread digital infringement of the copyrighted material now has made security firms, night-vision goggles, and metal detectors common in movie previews. The current national controversy over peer-to-peer file sharing of music highlights the difficult questions facing colleges and universities as they grapple with dramatic technological advances, disregard of copyright and misunderstanding about fair use of intellectual property. In this article, the authors discuss what faculty and administrators can and should do against copyright infringement that is likely to be occurring on most institutions' networks and the role of higher education in the current copyright debate by considering several factors--including copyright law, technological innovations, student attitudes, the actions of intellectual property owners, the actions of Congress and state legislators, and the role of colleges and universities.
