Safe and Supportive Schools for LGBTQ+ Youth. National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Position Statement

The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) believes school psychologists are ethically obligated to ensure all youth with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and/or gender expressions, are able to develop and express their personal identities in a school climate that is safe, accepting, and respectful of all persons and free from discrimination, harassment, violence, and abuse. This position statement outlines: (1) environmental risk and protective factors for LGBTQ+ youth; (2) ethical, legal, and affirmative practices for LGBTQ+ youth; (3) affirming attitudes for school psychologists; (4) key knowledge for the provision of culturally responsive services; and (5) the role of school psychologists in supporting LGBTQ+ youth.
