From Sacred Initiation to Bureaucratic Apostasy: Junior Secondary School-Leavers and the Secularisation of Education in Southern Africa.
Tournas, Stephen A.
Comparative Education, v32 n1 p27-43 Mar 1996
In Botswana, precolonial Tswana spirituality gave way to European secularization. This, plus related changes in labor patterns, government, and educational practices, led to the transformative educational philosophy that now separates the Tswana from the environment and traditional religious beliefs. This cultural fragmentation underlies the current crisis of increasing numbers of underemployed school-leavers, apparently abandoned by their government. (SV)
