World Perspective Case Descriptions on Educational Programs for Adults: Hungary.
Sari, Mihaly; Durko, Matyas
This document contains two case studies which provide an idea of the types of adult education programs available in Hungary. The first case study, prepared by Mihaly Sari, describes "The Month of Protecting Our Environment," a program developed in the small town of Puspokladany by a club of amateur anglers, a society for propagating scientific knowledge, and a cultural center of the town. During the years 1983-1987, the people involved in the program have worked to protect the wildlife of the lakes around the town, to convince everyone of the necessity of joint action in preserving the environment, and to urge voluntary action for the advantage of the communities. Activities such as lectures and video presentations are carried out during January each year. The program has been very successful and has been started in other towns. The second case study, by Matyas Durko describes "Realities of Our Time," an out-of-school, nonformal, adult education movement based on voluntary, annual competition. The basis for the program is the worker's brigade movement in which groups aim to achieve the title of socialist workers' brigade. The brigades of workers volunteering for the movement pledge to attain knowledge in at least four different cultural subjects and to compete with other brigades in those fields. Participants study alone or in small groups for about five months, then compete in a four-round competition. The movement has been successful in improving workers' knowledge and work output, although some problems in procedures have been noted. In addition to the two case descriptions, the document includes information on the World Perspective case study project, indexes of all cases by country and by category, and guidelines for contributors.
